California is on the front lines of climate change; facing heat waves, fires, drought and other climate-related impacts. As the largest sub-national economy in the world (and the world’s 5th largest if a nation), no similar sub-nation faces greater risk. But in 2018 California rose to the challenge and enshrined in law a 100% transition to renewable energy and zero-carbon resource by 2045. In 2022 the legislature further strengthened with clean energy targets of 90% by 2035 and 95% by 2040.
In 2020 California faced rolling blackouts. During the fall 2022 heatwave, California again faced the same emergency, when total demand reached 52,000 MW, close to total practical capacity, at a time when temperatures neared all-time highs at many locations in the state. Only exceptional effort on the part of Californians kept the lights on.
Bluewater is here to help. Bluewater is actively pursuing renewable energy projects in California that will reduce the risk of energy shortage in the peak demand periods will improving transmission grid performance and resilience. Projects that also benefit the local communities for the long term.
